My good pal Kevin made a post, talking about the VP for McCain, and how the US presidency will directly influence Canada… the place we both call home.
Watching this political battle from the outside leaves me with some very strong feelings. Obama seems like the kind of dude that should be at the head of the US government with some pretty forward-thinking ideas, while McCain sounds a lot like a “two-steps-back” kind of guy. Legislating against things like gay marriage, abortion, stem cell research and all kinds of hot-button things may make McCain’s campaign popular among conservatives… but I feel that, in order to ensure positive change in a turbulent time to come, the LAST thing we need is conservatives holding the reins of the most powerful country in the world.
In the next four years, a ton of shit is going to hit the fan. We’ve got all kinds of crazy going down in Asia and the Middle East. We’ve got a plunging economic superpower, stricken with trillions in foreign debt. We’ve got a society that’s so wrapped up in fear of “socialism”, that its own citizens suffer at the hands of a corrupt and inept public service system (read: health care, a la Michael Moore). If the US keeps doing things the way they’ve been doing them, are we ever going to see a brighter future? With so much wealth and potential, the US could be a strong leader for future generations instead of the public enemy it seems to have become among the nations of the world. Why not switch off the war machine and switch on something more peaceful? Everybody loves clean water and medicine… we could start there.
The United States definitely needs a new kind of leader… and one who doesn’t talk through his teeth. Because, on top of all the wild and wacky presidential platforms under the “McCain” title, his chompers are pretty creepy.
